Now, returning to the main question, what keeps us erect, I have logically approached it and carried out personal observation for over 20 years. In 1982 when I returned to Delhi after my postgraduation in Moscow, armed with a medical degree, diplomas and certificates in acupuncture, fasting therapy, hypnotherapy, iridology, homoeopathy etc, I was faced with a difficult task of setting up an integrated medical practice, blending the knowledge I had acquired. By good fortune I was able to open a clinic.

In India there are many homoeopaths, Ayurvedic physicians and naturopaths, so at first I could not convince people to come to me. Acupuncture, however, was something new, so I projected myself as a specialist in this area, though I wanted to be an integrated medical physician practising elements of everything I knew.

By sheer coincidence people approached me for treatment of backache and arthritis, two common conditions that are treated with acupuncture. Thus I had no choice but to treat these conditions for work experience and financial support. In Moscow, I'd treated all sorts of conditions from bronchial asthma to migraine, but in New Delhi, before I became well-known in my field, I was known as 'the best back man'.
